Early photos of a Dartmoor farm

From the hunt collection

These photographs of farming on Dartmoor are from the Hunt Collection. They date from the 1870s and were taken at Foxworthy Farm in the parishes of Manaton and Lustleigh by various members of the Hunt family including the artist, Cecil Arthur Hunt and his father, A. R. Hunt. The photographs were digitised by the Dartmoor Trust and appear by courtesy of the Hunt family.

The Lustleigh Society

The Lustleigh Society was formed in 1978 as an organisation for lectures on local history. In the years following, much material relating to the history of the village was donated to the Society.

In 2006 a larger room in The Old Vestry, where the archive was stored, became available. There followed an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund – and other funding bodies – to completely renovate the room to archival storage standard. The archive re-opened in April 2009 having been completely reorganised and re-catalogued. The Archives of Lustleigh provide an important insight into the development of a village situated on the edge of Dartmoor, which has origins in prehistory.

The Dartmoor Trust

The Dartmoor Trust is an independent charity. The focus of the Trust’s activities is to grant aid practical projects which help benefit Dartmoor, its landscape, communities and visitors.

The Trust’s objectives are to protect the natural landscape of Dartmoor and preserve its wildlife, archaeology and buildings; to educate the public to appreciate and respect Dartmoor and to stimulate awareness, for the conservation of all aspects of its physical and cultural environment; and to support the social and economic fabric of Dartmoor in ways which complement the above objectives.

The Trust’s largest project has been to establish the Dartmoor Trust Archive – an online collection of tens of thousands of historic images dating back to the 1800s.

This exhibition forms part of a community heritage project called Parishscapes – one of 28 projects under the aegis of the Heritage Lottery Fund-supported Moor than meets the eye Landscape Partnership Scheme, active on Dartmoor until summer 2019. Moor than meets the eye is bringing people together to explore Dartmoor’s rich past, conserve its wildlife and archaeology, improve understanding of the landscape and develop and share the skills needed to look after it for generations to come.

The Four Views on Dartmoor photo exhibition is currently at Greenhill Arts in Moretonhampstead until 1st September
