Now you don’t see that on Dartmoor very often – four Tibetan monks dressed in their red and saffron robes and spectacular head dresses walking the streets of Chagford.

The Gyuto Monks of Tibet arrived in Chagford recently to give a performance at St Michael’s Church.

They are on a tour of the West Country and perhaps because this is so unusual to see this in this part of the world, the performance was a sell out.

Most of the monks were in fact brought up in Dharamsala, North India, close to the Tibetan border.

Their spiritual Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama was forced to flee into exile in 1959 following the brutal suppression of the Tibetan uprising in the capital Lhasa.
