Poem by Tony Staples

Photograph taken near Burrator Woods by Myles Pinkney

Of a sudden
she came upon me
as I tread the rich carpet
of the ancient untouched wood

her sound first
cracking old bones long fallen
she leans my ear

then rising
leaping
joins me in the sanctuary

never long
for she is for the living
not the dead

warning and steady approach
aware my curious gaze
through limb and leaf and dew drop web

a thought
an aching heart beat
and vanishing
she to her world
and I to mine
