A Leeds based company Pharmacy 2U are blitzing the South West with television ads and mail shots encouraging people to use their prescription service.
Pharmacy 2U are taking advantage of the fact that Health Centres are able to issue prescriptions in an electronic format. It sounds a great idea but has some serious pitfalls.
The Pharmacy 2U operation depends on the Royal Mail, so if you are not at home you may have your prescription left with a neighbour or in a “safe place”, not a good idea.
David Fulton, pharmacist of both the Moretonhampstead and Chagford Pharmacies on Dartmoor said: “Pharmacy 2U are cherry-picking the repeat prescriptions that form the bulk of the business for both Mortonhampstead and Chagford pharmacies.
“It would not be very long before we became non-viable and disappeared altogether. Then should you want an urgent prescription, some medicines to buy, advice or help, or indeed toiletries there will be nowhere to go. The opportunity for face to face contact and indeed social interaction will be lost.”
These letters and advertisements are misleading, suggesting that surgeries endorse or support this service.
