Carolyn and Chris Laycock tragically lost their teenage son Peter in 2004. Since then, they had always said they would like to write a book of walks in memory of Peter, and spring 2020 seemed the ideal time during ‘lockdown’ with the coronavirus disease pandemic.
As they were only able to exercise from their home, they took to walking in different directions from their house.
Carolyn and Chris said: “It became a challenge to try different circular routes each day using the Explorer 110 and Dartmoor Outdoor Leisure 28
What a privilege to live in such a beautiful and diverse area, with the rivers, woodland, farmland, old drover tracks and country lanes.
‘The weather on the whole was incredible and it was wonderful to experience the seasonal changes as the hedgerows transformed with the seasonal flowers from the yellows and whites of early spring, to the blues and pinks of later spring and the different shades of green in early summer.
‘Each walk changed dramatically as the leaves in the trees came out and the fantastic variety of plants grew up. The walks have been tried, tested and refined by a number of our good friends who have also enjoyed exploring new areas of their local town and surrounds.
‘Money from the sale of this booklet will be donated to Brake – a charity which supports bereaved parents and those whose children have been severely injured in road traffic accidents. They helped us in the early days of our grief.
‘We hope you enjoy the walks as much as we do.”
The book, Ten Circular Walks around Bovey Tracey, is available from Chris Laycock or Alastair Grieve at Stover Golf Club.
